Introduction

Hello, my name is Tom Ashton.
I'm a third year Creative Writing student, co-head editor of the creative writing magazine 'The Writer's Quibble' and an aspiring author.
Mostly, I write transgressive fiction with elements of dark humour but i've also been known to write horror, thriller and fantasy. I'm also technically a published poet.
Furthermore, I recently a received a 'First' for a radio script I wrote, which has encouraged me to experiment in different areas.
On this blog you can expect to find my opinion columns, essays and reports as well as poetry and lots of prose.

Please leave me some feedback, in the comment boxes at bottom of each article as it is crucial to me as a writer and therefore greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Radio Project Completion

Well, that's my radio work done, dusted and submitted. Feelings of elation, following it's completion, although i've thoroughly enjoyed the process and will definitely be working on some more scripts in the near future.
Yesterday, was suitibly stressful; making the sound exactly fifteen minutes, editing the the script and rationale accordingly and wrestling with an unruly laptop.
All over now though, even if submitting it wasn't as easy as suggested, so on to the next project; i'm feeling prose.

Coming soon on this blog; my completed Radio drama, THE BENDS, for your listening (dis)pleasure.

Deadline (ii)

Scratch that; I will be doing no radio drama related shopping as it's bank holiday. Doh!

Deadline

Well, 'the-behind-schedule' monster reared it's ugly head yesterday; I had to collect the last of the SFX, download a fair few programs, learn how to use Audacity and cope with 'program not responding, loss of work and unpredictable formatting. However, i'm now all sorted, in regards to compiling the radio drama, although today I need to do some hair-tearing editing, on Audacity and Microsoft Word, to make sure everything comes to fifteen minutes. I'm hoping this will be easy due to unnecessary pauses I can delete...but is anything ever easy?

Because I was up until 8am this morning, restoring my lost work, i've had to sleep into the afternoon and still not had my standard five hours! Weary today, but have to do some radio-drama related shopping (blanks cds, text books, etc).

At least i'll get to see the sun one last time before the descending gloom of tomorrow's deadline.

One more unto the breach...

Progress Report

Yesterday, I locked horns with the ruthless God of Formatting!!!
I'd already written my script on Microsoft Word and it turned out that Celtx had no import function; you had input each line of individually.
Maddening, though not as maddening as having to format on Word; which took two and a half hours, due to some troublesome border lines that refused to be deleted.
(Type three *'s, start a new paragraph then try to delete the horizontal line, it creates.)

All done now, if a bit behind schedule and a long day of sound editing ahead.

Fingers crossed, the sound will be done by tomorrow.

Onwards!

Light at the End of the Tunnel.

Well, I finished that soul-destroying rationale at five am this morning and rewarded myself by going to see a play, whose SFX were done by the cracking fellow who'll be doing the ones for my script.

I've just given my script and rationale to a fellow writer for proofreading and i'm about to download audacity, so I can start with the sound editing.

Adrenaline builds as the finish line approaches.

Writing a Rationale (ii)

Feeling fairly confident now, regarding this Rationale, despite an initially unsuccessful day on writing front, i've blasted out a few hundred words in the last few early morning hours.

I aim to conduct some research tomorrow, finish the final draft, and get it applicable with the subject stylesheet,  then do some serious sound editing on Saturday and finally add the rest of the SFX on Sunday.

The slope seems less steep.

Motivation

I woke up late today, in order to avoid a hangover, and spent the rest of the day socialising with friends. Unfortunately, this means i've done no work and now i'm too weary to concentrate...though, coincidentally, I feel switched on enough to watch all the good tv that's on.
I find myself with a decision to make; drink caffeine, try to stay awake and pray I find the will to do work or go to bed so i'll be more alert/productive tomorrow.
I'd much prefer to go to bed but then i'll have done no work all day. I must fight my demons of laziness and try to do a few hundred words before tiredness overpowers me.

There is no excuse for inactivity; success belongs to the doers.

SFX

Half the sound effects sorted for the radio script! Huzzah!
Ah, the benefits of having a housemate that's an up and coming sound engineer!

Daniel David; remember the name!

Second sound effect meeting on Sunday and then for the awkward foxtrot with the notoriously troublesome program; Audacity, but, until then, the rationale work continues...sigh.

Writing a Rationale

Well, the fun ends and the beigeness begins.
Currently one hundred words into a one thousand word 'rationale', which  is essentially a process analysis, explaining why I chose certain locations and names etc, for my script.

Honestly, this feels so mind-sloshingly tedious that i'm worried that, if I tilt my head, one way or the other, my brain might dribble out of my ear.

Recording a Radio Script

I recorded my script for the first time last night; it was great fun, even if I was doing all the voices, making it sound merely like the manic ramblings of a dopey northerner.

Recording with a team of the most velvet tones tomorrow; it helps to have friends who share your passion for writing.

Viva la radio.

Writing a Radio Script (iiii)

I took a Writing for Radio module quite by accident, due to module cock-up at my university, however, despite having never written a radio script before, i've thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
As a result, I will definitely be writing more radio scripts in the future and feel this could well be one of the best avenues for my work.

I certainly have the face for radio.

Writing a Radio Script (iii)

Ha-ha done!
For future reference, three thousand, seven hundred and seventy words equals (approx) fifteen minutes of Radio Script!

Writing a Radio Script (ii)

Down to eighteen pages now; getting there. I'm really hoping most of the space has been taken up with special effects, rather than dialogue, so seventeen pages will equal fifteen minutes.
Will cut out a few more lines of pure genius and then have another read through.

Fingers crossed.

Negative Emotion

I've always found negative emotions like bitterness, envy, hate and rage to be great motivators for writing.
Hide them away on an A4 page.

Writing a Radio Script

I've to stick to a maximum of fifteen minutes, of Radio Script, which is roughly fifteen pages. I've written twenty five pages, so that means i've a lot of heart-wrenching cutting to do.

God damn limitations, making me skin my gold.
